That boat has sailed

Ella was in trouble today because she wouldn't clean up her toys. She had an hour to do so before Eli's nap time. If she finished cleaning I would take her to her friend's house. She chose to play with Eli instead. So when it came time to put Eli in his crib for nap time I had Ella call her friend to cancel the play date. Very sad.

Well, two hours later Eli still wasn't sleeping (no nap today, sigh). And the toys were still on the floor. At this point Ella asked me a question: If she picked up the toys now could she go to her friends house? My answer: Nope. That boat has sailed.

Ella looked around the toy room. Then she asked me: What boat? Where is it?

=)

She did end up cleaning up. Eli even helped. The reward was Orange Julius. And believe it or not it only took her five minutes to clean up. I sure hope she learned her lesson so we don't have to cancel anymore play dates. Those darn boats just don't wait very long.

It sounds kind of tough teaching lessons to kids. How do you do it. I'm afraid when I'm a mother I am going to give in because I feel so bad. When do you give in and when do you not?
